Yes, completely. There is no purchase, no subscription, no trial period and no unlock screen — every feature is available from the first launch. You don't need to create an account with us either; Gateway has no account system at all.

If you want a full pedalboard around the amp — an effects chain, scenes, setlists, MIDI control and backing tracks — that's Gateway Pro, a separate paid app.

You're on an older version. Gateway used to run on a trial with a one-time unlock; it is now free for everyone, and that screen is gone. Update Gateway from the App Store and it won't come back.

If you bought the unlock while it existed: thank you, genuinely. Nothing you saved is affected, and the app you now have is the full one, permanently.

An iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or later. Gateway runs in landscape, so turn your device sideways.

A wired audio interface gives the best latency and sound, but Gateway also processes the built-in microphone, so you can try it with no extra hardware. Use headphones or an interface rather than the built-in speaker — the speaker feeding the microphone will howl.

Work down this list — it catches almost everything:

• Allow microphone access. Gateway needs input access to hear your interface or the built-in mic. If you declined the prompt, turn it back on in iOS Settings → Gateway.
• Check the meters. The IN meter under the analyzer tells you whether signal is arriving at all. If IN is dead, the problem is before Gateway: the cable, the interface, or the input Gateway is listening to (SETTINGS → audio device).
• If IN moves but OUT doesn't, raise GAIN and OUT, and make sure an amp model is loaded in the AMP wheel.
• There is no power button. The engine starts by itself. If the audio route drops — you unplugged headphones, or another app grabbed the session — tap the display to restart it.
• In a host app, make sure the track carrying Gateway has input monitoring on.

Two ways, and you can mix them freely:

• TONE3000. The TONES button opens the built-in browser for the TONE3000 community library — search, sort and scroll through amp captures and cabinet IRs. Tap one to hear it immediately with your guitar; the heart saves it to your library.
• Your own files. Import .nam models and .wav impulse responses from the Files app through the AMP and CAB wheels in the header. Those same wheels hold your saved library, and a long press on an entry deletes it.

No. Gateway works fully without one — you can play the models you already have and import your own files. A free TONE3000 account is only needed to browse and download from their library inside the app. Signing in happens on TONE3000's own web page; we never see your password.

Gateway includes an Audio Unit (AUv3) effect extension. Launch the Gateway app at least once on the device so iOS registers it, then open a host that supports AUv3 — GarageBand, Logic Pro, AUM, Loopy Pro, Cubasis and others — and add Gateway as an effect on an audio track.

In the host's plugin list it appears as “Example: Gateway”. The app and the plugin share one library, so any model or IR you save in the app is there in the plugin too. Importing files and signing in to TONE3000 are done in the app.

GATE silences the hiss between notes · GAIN drives the amp model · BASS, MID and TREBLE are the tone stack · OUT is the final level. Drag a tile up or down to change it, and double-tap to reset it.

The bars across the display are a live 16-band analyzer of the processed signal; with no signal they draw a resting curve shaped by your tone controls, so the display always answers to the knobs.

Yes — TUNER takes over the display. It listens to the same input as the amp, so you can leave it open while you play.

Audio device, sample rate and buffer size; whether audio keeps running in the background; the light or dark appearance; a bypass for the tone stack; and the click track (metronome with tap tempo and its own volume). Every multiple choice there is a dropdown.

A smaller buffer means lower latency and more CPU load. If you hear crackling, raise it.

Your audio is processed entirely on your device and is never recorded or uploaded — Gateway has no recording feature and no code that sends audio anywhere. It collects no personal data, contains no analytics or tracking, and makes no network connection at all unless you use the optional TONE3000 browser. See the Privacy Policy for the full details.

Gateway is the free player: one amp model, one cabinet IR, a tone stack, a gate, a tuner and the TONE3000 browser — the whole app is a single screen.

Gateway Pro is a paid app built around a full effects chain: up to 64 blocks (delay, reverb, compressor, EQ, saturation, modulation, pitch, lo-fi and more) in series or in parallel, scenes and presets, setlists, MIDI control, a Live mode with backing tracks, home-screen widgets, and a block that hosts other Audio Unit plugins inside the chain. They are separate apps with separate libraries: models and IRs saved in one do not appear in the other.
